Who is St. Maria Goretti?
Maria Goretti was an Italian girl who lived in the years 1890-1902. She was a very holy girl who was obedient, kind, and pure. Her father was a farmer, and his business partner who lived nearby had a son, Alessandro, who tried to seduce Maria. She refused him strongly, exclaiming, “No, no! Do not touch me! It is a sin, Alessandro!” Angry, he then stabbed her to death at the age of eleven. Maria appeared to Alessandro after her martyrdom to forgive him and he was present at her canonization. After the deluge of miracles following her death, Pope Pius XII canonized her in 1950, as a model of purity and the patron saint of teenage girls and modern youth.
A Bit More On What We Do…
Service of God and the Church in, around, and through the sacristy… sounds all well and good, but what does that mean? It means the Sodality makes things pretty! We’re responsible for decorating the church, taking care of the vessels before and after Mass, helping the altar boys in the Posse, and making sure everything looks nice for Jesus in the Mass!
Discernment of God’s Will… that’s a bit easier, right? Part of being in the Maria Goretti Sodality means actively searching for God’s Will in your life. Part of this means that before entering your parish’s Sodality, upon leaving the parish (if you ever do), and before graduating to a higher level of membership, members will be required to visit a convent of sisters.
The Service of God through neighbor… another pretty easy-to-understand one, but how? The Sodality strives to accomplish this through good manners and Maria Goretti’s kindness and gentle concern for our sisters’ and brothers’ souls. Also, should the Posse need help in any way, the Sodality will gladly give it, expecting nothing in return, to fulfill this goal. The Sodality will seek to find inspirations from places like Camp Savio, the parish’s youth group, and the pro life office.
The Fostering of the Feminine Genius which God has given to every woman… that sounds interesting, right? This goal is based upon a teaching of St. Pope John Paul II. In his Letter to Women, JPII talks about the great gifts which women have given to the world throughout history through what he calls the “Genius of Women” or Feminine Genius”. More specifically, this means the God-given beauty of women and the way we serve, is different from the way men serve, and very enriching! The Sodality seeks to foster this beauty through a devotion to Mary, the Perfect Woman.
Evangelizing in Modesty… a most important goal for our times! Modesty is defined as, “Having a humble estimate of one’s merits; free from vanity, egotism, boastfulness, or great pretentions; having regard for the decencies of behavior, speech and dress”. The Maria Goretti Sodality aspires to imitate St. Maria Goretti through modesty and purity in eyes, mind, and heart and to evangelize all we encounter by this virtue.
